BLUE LAGOON

Little doily/coaster

Depending on thread you use, this can be a small doily or a coaster; furthermore, if you repeat rows 6-8 twice or three times (of course you must increase the chain # to let the doily remain flat) , you can increase the size at your pleasure.

Size : 16 cm (6 inches) diameter

Material: Pearl cotton # 5, hook 1.7 mm (Boye steel #7) ; you can substitute with Cebelia #10 or equivalent cordonnet thread (but the gauge can slightly vary)

Stitches : ch, sl st, sc, dc, tr, picot = 4 chs, insert the hook in 1st ch done, sl st.

Difficulty: medium

Directions

Start with 10 ch, join ;

1. 3 ch (for substituting 1st dc), 19 dc in lp; join with sl st in first st.

2. (dc on dc; 1 ch) 20 times; join with sl st in first st.

3. sl st in first 1-ch loop; 5 ch (3 ch to substitute 1st dc + 2), * dc in next lp, 2 ch * Repeat from * to *18 times more; join with sl st in first st. (20 dc)

4. 1 ch, * 1 sc on dc, 3 ch, (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc) in next loop; 3 ch *; Repeat from * to *19 times more; join with sl st in first st.

5. sl sts to center of first 2 ch-lp, 4 ch (for substituting 1st tr), 3 tr closed together in same lp, 5 ch; *4 tr closed together in lp, 5 ch *; Repeat from * to * 18 times more; join with sl st in first st.

6. sl sts to center of first lp, 1 ch, sc in lp, 7 ch, * sc in next lp, 7 ch * ; Repeat from * to * 17 times more; sc in next lp, 4 ch , dc in first sc for closing row.

7 -8. 8 ch, * sc in next lp, 7 ch * ; Repeat from * to * around; sc in next-to-last lp, 4 ch , dc in first ch for closing row.

9. sl sts to center of first lp, 3 ch (for substituting 1st dc), picot, (dc, picot) 2 times in lp, dc in lp, 5 ch, sc in next lp, 5 ch, * (dc, picot) 3 times in next lp, dc in same lp, 5 ch, sc in next lp, 5 ch *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in initial 3rd ch, cut thread.

N.B.

    * Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
          o first sc with 1 ch, sc;
          o first hdc with 2 ch;
          o first dc with 3 ch;
          o first tr with 4 ch...and so on
    * When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
    * Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
